For in her is the spirit of understanding: holy, one, manifold, subtile, eloquent, active, undefiled, sure, sweet, loving that which is good, quick, which nothing hindereth, beneficent,23 Gentle, kind, steadfast, assured, secure, having all power, overseeing all things, and containing all spirits, intelligible, pure, subtile.24 For wisdom is more active than all active things: and reacheth everywhere by reason of her purity.25 For she is a vapour of the power of God, and a certain pure emanation of the glory of the almighty God: and therefore no defiled thing cometh into her.26 For she is the brightness of eternal light, and the unspotted mirror of God’s majesty, and the image of his goodness.27 And being but one, she can do all things: and remaining in herself the same, she reneweth all things, and through nations conveyeth herself into holy souls, she maketh the friends of God and prophets.28 For God loveth none but him that dwelleth with wisdom.29 For she is more beautiful than the sun, and above all the order of the stars: being compared with the light, she is found before it.30 For after this cometh night, but no evil can overcome wisdom.1 She reacheth therefore from end to end mightily, and ordereth all things sweetly.
Because the Father is eternal, the Son is eternal, since he is light from light. If there is a parent, there is also a Son. If there were not a son, how, and of whom, would there be a parent? But both exist, and exist always. Since God is light, Christ is radiance. Since the spirit exists (in fact, "God is spirit"), by analogy Christ is called emanation. Indeed, "he is an emanation of the power of God."
LAMED. For ever, O Lord, thy word standeth firm in heaven.90 Thy truth unto all generations: thou hast founded the earth, and it continueth.91 By thy ordinance the day goeth on: for all things serve thee.130 The declaration of thy words giveth light: and giveth understanding to little ones.135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: and teach me thy justifications.175 My soul shall live and shall praise thee: and thy judgments shall help me.
But that the providence and ordering power of the Word also, over all and toward all, is attested by all inspired Scripture, this passage suffices to confirm our argument, where people who speak of God say, "You have laid the foundation of the earth, and it abides. The day continues according to your ordinance."
For this is the divine promise: "The Lord shall fight for you." Henceforth, although afflictions and trials from without overtake them, yet, being fashioned after the apostolic words and "being steadfast in tribulations and persevering in prayers" and in meditation on the law, they stand against those things that befall them, are well-pleasing to God and give utterance to the words that are written, "Afflictions and distresses are come on me, but your commandments are my meditation."
And being asked by the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come? he answered them, and said: The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:†21 Neither shall they say: Behold here, or behold there. For lo, the kingdom of God is within you.†22 And he said to his disciples: The days will come, when you shall desire to see one day of the Son of man; and you shall not see it.23 And they will say to you: See here, and see there. Go ye not after, nor follow them:24 For as the lightening that lighteneth from under heaven, shineth unto the parts that are under heaven, so shall the Son of man be in his day.25 But first he must suffer many things, and be rejected by this generation.
As if he said, If at the coming of Antichrist, his fame shall be spread abroad, as though Christ had appeared, go not out, nor follow him. For it cannot be that He who was once seen on earth, shall any more dwell in the corners of the earth. It will therefore be he of whom we speak, not the true Christ. For this is the clear sign of the second coming of our Saviour, that suddenly the lustre of His coming shall fill the whole world; and so it follows, For as the lightning that lighteneth, &c. For He will not appear walking upon the earth, as any common man, but will illuminate our whole universe, manifesting to all men the radiance of His divinity.
