John Calvin was a French lawyer and humanist who became the foremost theologian of the Reformed tradition. Forced from France for his Protestant convictions, he settled at Geneva and made it the model city of the Reformation. His Institutes of the Christian Religion, revised and enlarged across his life, is the most systematic statement of Reformed theology, and he wrote lucid commentaries on nearly every book of the Bible. Calvin’s emphasis on the sovereignty of God and the authority of Scripture shaped Protestant churches across Europe and beyond.
