P. " It shall be given.'''' The insertion of these words in italics, in the Protestant version, is unnecessary, and calculated to mislead the reader. Christ does not deny that He can give the seats of honor, but says that He must give them to those for whom they are prepared by His Father. " For whom," asks St. Chrysostom, " has it been pre- pared '? For such as may become conspicuous for good works. There- fore He did not say : To give is not Mine, but My Father's, lest any one should suppose Him to be powerless and unable to bestow the reward." See also Campbell.
