Remigius of Auxerre

Remigius was a Benedictine monk of the abbey of Saint-Germain at Auxerre and one of the leading teachers of the late Carolingian age, who taught in turn at Auxerre, Reims, and Paris. A tireless commentator, he wrote glosses on the Scriptures — on Genesis and the Psalms — and on the whole range of school-texts, from the Latin grammarians to Boethius and Martianus Capella. Copied and used in classrooms across Europe for centuries, his commentaries were one of the channels by which the learning of the Fathers and of antiquity reached the medieval schools.
