Since therefore the people that serves Antichrist is given over to a reprobate sense, so as to believe a lie, that is, Antichrist — the people that would not believe the truth, that is, Christ — it is rejected from the kingdom of the vine, that is, of Christ; and from the olive, that is, the grace of the Holy Spirit; and from the fig, that is, the sweetness of the divine law. And they said. The bramble is a kind of briar, which people commonly call the bear's thorn, exceedingly rough and thorny, by which Antichrist is signified, who will lay waste the human race with all roughness and savagery: and fire shall go out from the bramble, that is, iniquity from Antichrist, and it shall devour all who trust in him together with him.
