Hebrews 1:3 Douay-Rheims

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the figure of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, making purgation of sins, sitteth on the right hand of the majesty on high.

Francis Patrick Kenrick

1796–1863 Catholic

This means, "by His powerful word." He preserves all things in their order by His sovereign will. fi G. P. "when He had by Himself purged our sins." The Alexandrian and Vatican manuscripts, and the Armenian version, have not, "by himself," which words, as also "our," are expunged by Lachmann. The latter is wanting in four Uncial manuscripts. The work of redemption is ascribed to Him who created, and who still preserves the world, and the exaltation of His humanity, in recom- pense of His atonement, is declared. "As regards Him, He saved all." St. Chrysostom.
