Matthew 5:20
Douay-Rheims
For I tell you, that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Francis Patrick Kenrick
Virtue, good works. Luke xi. 39. The doctors of the law and the Pharisees professed strict adherence to all the legal observances, and to many traditional usages ; but they were wanting in a spirit of true piety. Their acts were tainted with pride, vanity and self-confidence. In order to gain heaven, we must practise supernatural virtue, from pure motives.
