Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you tithe mint, and anise, and cummin, and have left the weightier things of the law; judgment, and mercy, and faith. These things you ought to have done, and not to leave those undone.

Luke xi. 42. Campbell and Bloomfield remark that anise answers only in sound to the Greek terra. These are mere examples of the minuteness with which the Pharisees observed the obligation of paying tithes, since they gave the tenth portion of the most trifling herbs.
