Psalm 2:9
Douay-Rheims
Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, and shalt break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
Francis Patrick Kenrick
p, « Thou shalt break them." The Massoretic punctuation, which this version represents, is sup- ported by the Chaldean. The Syriac and Arabic, as well as St. Jerome, support the Septuagint and Vul- gate. To rule with an iron sceptre is, however, a harsh metaphor. To break a vessel with an iron bar is more natural, and in accordance with the other member of the sentence.
