Lam 3:51 · Douay-Rheims
“Ain. My eye hath wasted my soul because of all the daughters of my city.”
On this verse:
“My eye sullies my soul more than all the daughters of my city Jeremiah was from a priestly family, and he said, “My eye, with its tears, sullies my face over myself more than all the daughters of my city.” sullies Heb. עוֹלְלָה, an expression of sullying, like (Job 16:15): “and sullied (וְעוֹלַלְתִּי) my radiance.” more than all the daughters of my city My family has more to cry for than all the daughters of the city, for it was chosen for sanctity and for the service of the Holy One, blessed be He, over all Israel.”
Hebrew and Aramaic words are the commentator’s citations of the sacred text; the English translation that follows each is the translator’s.
