That you may approve the better things, that you may be sincere and without offence unto the day of Christ,

“Therefore, since the Jews still contend that the Christ is not yet come, whom we have in so many ways approved to be come, let the Jews recognise their own fate, -a fate which they were constantly foretold as destined to incur after the advent of the Christ, on account of the impiety with which they despised and slew Him.”

“He says, "in knowledge and all discernment, that ye may approve the things that are excellent," that is, the things that are profitable. This I say not for my own sake, says he, but for yours, for there is danger lest any one be spoiled by the love of the heretics; for all this he hints at, and see how he brings it in. Not for my own sake, says he, do I say this, but that ye may be sincere, that is, that ye receive no spurious doctrine under the pretence of love. How then, says he, "If it be possible, live peaceably with all men"? "Live peaceably" (Rom. xii. 18), he says, not, Love so as to be harmed by that friendship; for he says, "if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; that ye may be sincere" (Matt. v. 29), that is, before God, "and without offence," that is, before men, for many men's friendships are often a hurt to them. Even though it hurts thee not, says he, still another may stumble thereat. "Unto the day of Christ"; i.e. that ye may then be found pure, having caused no one to stumble.”

“Having set out the matter of joy concerning future hope, he here shows for what he makes his prayer on their behalf. And first he sets forth his desire, which is shown to be utterly fervent; second, the matter of the prayer, at *and this I pray*, etc. And because the desire of the heart is manifest to God alone, therefore he calls God as witness that he prays for them with desire. Job ch. 12: *behold, in heaven is my witness*, namely God, etc. *How I long for you* — namely I — existing in the bowels of Jesus Christ. Or, how I long for you to be in them; as if he were to say: how I long for your salvation and participation in the visceral charity of Christ. Luke 1:78: *through the bowels of the mercy of God*, etc.; as if to say: because the power of love reaches to the depths and inmost parts of the heart. Or, I long that you be in the bowels of Jesus Christ, that is, that you love him intimately, so that you may also be loved by him; for in this consists the life of man. Then, when he says *and this I pray*, etc., he sets forth the prayer, and he desires three goods. First, as to the increase of interior charity. For interior affection is perfected through charity, and therefore for one who does not have charity, it should be desired that he have it; but for one who has it, that it be perfected. Hence he says *that charity*, etc. But for the increase of charity, God must be prayed to, because God alone works this in us. 2 Cor. 9:8: *And God is able to make all grace abound in you, that, always having all sufficiency in all things, you may abound unto every good work*, etc. And this it is necessary that we too ask, because Matt. 5:20: *unless your justice abound more than that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven*. Second, as to the intellect. Hence he says *in all knowledge*. But does knowledge come from charity? Yes, because it is said in 1 John 2:27: *and as for you, let the anointing which you have received from him abide in you, and you have no need that any man teach you, but as his anointing teaches you concerning all things*, etc. Likewise, charity is the spirit, of which it is said in John 16:13: *when that spirit of truth shall come, he will teach you all*, etc. The reason for this is that whoever has a habit — if the habit is right, a right judgment follows from it concerning those things that pertain to that habit; but if it is corrupt, a false one. Just as, concerning venereal matters, the temperate man has good judgment, while the intemperate man does not, but a false one. But all things that are done by us are to be informed by charity, and therefore he who has charity has right judgment, also as to things knowable. And thus he says *in all knowledge*, namely by which he may recognize the truth and adhere firmly concerning those things that belong to faith. This is the knowledge of the saints, of which it is spoken in Wisdom 10:10. And as to things to be done, and thus he says *and in all sense*, which is the cognitive power concerning exterior objects. And it is proper to it that it immediately judges rightly concerning its proper sensible object. And therefore this name has been transferred to the interior judgment of reason; hence those are called "sensible" who have right judgment concerning things to be done. Wisdom 1:1: *have a sense of the Lord in goodness*, etc. Wisdom 6:16: *to think, then, upon her, is a consummated sense*, etc. But this sense ought to be not only considerative but also discretive between good and evil, and between good and better. Hence he adds *that you may approve*, etc. Note that charity perfects the sense so that it approves good things; but perfect charity, so that it approves better things. 1 Cor. 12:31: *be zealous for the better gifts*, etc.; and below, ch. 14: *follow after charity*, etc. And therefore he says *more excellent things*. Third, as to the effect. And first he sets forth immunity from evil; second, perfection in good. The first, in that he says *that you may be sincere*. For there is a twofold sin to be avoided: namely, that of interior corruption, by which a man is corrupted in himself, and this is excluded by sincerity. 1 Cor. 5:8: *in the unleavened bread of sincerity*, etc. The other is against one's neighbor, namely offense. And therefore he says *and without offense*. 1 Cor. 4:10: *be without offense to the Jews and the Gentiles, and to the Church of God, as I also*, etc. And 2 Cor. 6:3: *giving no offense to any man*, etc. *Unto the day of Christ Jesus*, that is, until the end of life. Matt. 24:13: *he who shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved*. As to grace he says *filled with the fruit of justice*, so that the works of justice are, as it were, a fruit. Rom. 6:22: *you have your fruit unto sanctification*, etc. Or *the fruit of justice*, that is, the reward of justice, namely the crown. 2 Tim. 4:8: *as to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice*, etc. Wisdom 4: *for the fruit of good labors is glorious*, etc. And this is had through Christ, because all things that we do are good through him. John 15:5: *without me you can do nothing*, etc. And these things are to be done for this end, namely unto the glory and praise of God, because from the works of the saints God is glorified, since others thereby break forth into the praise of God. Ps. 150:1: *praise the Lord in his saints*, etc. Jer. 33:9: *it shall be to me a name, and a joy, and a praise, and an exultation to all the nations of the earth, who shall hear of all the good things*, etc. Then, when he says *but I would have you know*, etc., he admonishes concerning things to come. And first he sets forth examples to be followed and to be avoided; second, he concludes with a moral admonition in ch. 4, at *therefore, my most beloved brethren*, etc. Concerning the first he does two things, for first he shows what things are to be imitated; second, what things are to be avoided, ch. 3, at *as for the rest*, etc. Likewise the first is divided into two, for first he puts himself forward for them to imitate; second, others, ch. 2, at *if there be therefore*, etc. Likewise the first into three, for first he sets forth as an example his own progress; second, the joy which he has from that progress, at *for what*, etc.; third, the fruit from his own progress, at *for I know*, etc. Likewise the first into two. First he sets forth the progress; second, the manner, at *so that my bonds*, etc. He says therefore: I have admonished you unto progress, and that you may have my progress as a pattern, I wish you to know, both the things that concern me — outwardly, because the tribulations, even though they were exterior, did not change me inwardly, but rather they turned out unto progress, since from them the faith preached made greater progress. 2 Cor. 1:6: *whether we be in tribulation, it is for your exhortation and salvation; or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation*, etc. And he shows the progress. First as to himself; second as to others, at *so that the more*, etc. As to himself indeed it had been manifest that he suffered such things for Christ constantly, so that he was bound in chains, whence it is said *so that my bonds*, etc., which is glorious for Christ's sake. 1 Peter 4:15: *let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or a coveter of other men's goods; but if as a Christian, let him not be ashamed*, etc. *In every praetorium*, as in the court of Caesar, etc. But on the part of others, the faith was growing in common. Hence he says *so that the more*, etc. 1 Macc. ch. 4: concerning the elephants. Ecclus. 10:2: *according to the judge of the people, so also are his ministers*, etc. Prov. 18: *the just, like a confident lion, shall be without dread*, etc. Yet on the part of others there is diversity, because some spoke well, some ill. And those who spoke well, some did so out of general charity and some out of a special love for the apostle. And those who spoke ill, some did so out of general malice, some out of a special hatred toward the apostle. But as it seems to me, the apostle shows a twofold cause on account of which some were preaching. First, on account of envy. And therefore the apostle shows their depraved intention, saying *some indeed out of envy*, etc. James 3:16: *where jealousy and contention are, there is inconstancy, and every depraved work*. 1 Cor. 3:3: *since there is among you jealousy and contention, are you not carnal?* Second, on account of love of Christ and of the Gospel. Hence he says *some out of good*, etc. Ps. 150:20: *deal kindly, in good will*, etc. But the apostle adds, saying *but some out of charity*, namely that which produces good will, etc., because they preached in order to supply the deficiency of me as teacher. Then the apostle explains what he had said, stating that some preached not according to a sound intention, but out of contention. Their corrupt intention was manifest in two ways: in one way, that by preaching publicly, they might cause disturbance among the Gentile people against the apostle, over and above that which he already had. In the other way, because they believed that Paul, hearing them usurp the office committed to him, would be troubled, and thereby affliction would be added to one already afflicted.”

“That ye may approve things that are excellent,.... Or "try things that differ". There are some things that differ one from other; as morality and grace, earthly things, and heavenly things, carnal and spiritual, temporal and eternal things, law and Gospel, the doctrines of men, and the doctrines of Christ; all which differ as much as chaff and wheat, as gold, silver, precious stones, and wood, hay, stubble. These are to be tried and proved; they are not to be received without distinction, but should be examined, which is right and best to be chosen and preferred; and to such trial and examination it is necessary that a man should be transformed, by the renewing of his mind, that he should have spiritual light, knowledge, and experience, have his spiritual senses exercised to discern the difference of things, and also the guidance, direction, and influence of the Spirit of God: and this trial must be made, not according to carnal reason, and the judgment and dictates of it; for the most excellent things are above it, and out of its sphere, and therefore judged foolish, and rejected by it; but according to the word of God, the Scriptures of truth, in the light of the divine Spirit, and with spiritual judgment and sense; when some things will be found excellent, as Christ, and the knowledge of him in his person, offices, grace, righteousness, blood, sacrifice, and satisfaction, and the several truths of the Gospel relating to peace, pardon, justification, adoption, sanctification, and eternal life; and of the several doctrines of the Gospel, some will appear in their nature and use more excellent than others, more grand and sublime; such as concern the sovereign and distinguishing grace of God, the glory of Christ, and the salvation of the elect; some being milk for babes, others meat for strong men. And these being tried and proved, first by the word of God, and then by the experience of the saints, are to be approved above thousands of gold and silver, and esteemed more than our necessary food; even the sincere milk of the word, as it is by newborn babes, as well as the strong meat of it by the adult, and all to be highly valued and abode by, and held fast, That ye may be sincere; or "pure", as the Syriac version renders it; pure as the sun, discerned and judged by the light of it, as the word signifies, which discovers motes, faults, and flaws; in which, some think, is a metaphor taken either from the eagle, which holds up its young against the sun, and such as can bear the light of it she retains as her own, but such that cannot she rejects as a spurious brood; or from persons in business, who hold up the goods they are buying to the sun, to see if they can observe any fault in them: so such may be said to be sincere, or pure, who are pure in heart, life, and conversation, whose principles and practices will bear the test of light; such are sincere, who are like honey without wax, and fine flour without leaven, that have no mixture of corruption in doctrine, life, or manners; whose grace is genuine and right; whose faith is unfeigned; whose love to God, and Christ, and one another, is without dissimulation; whose hope is lively, and of a soul purifying nature, and is built on a good foundation; and whose repentance is attended with genuine effects, and proper fruits; whose principles are unmixed; who do not corrupt or adulterate the word of God, but desire and retain the sincere milk of it, and hold the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience; whose worship is also pure and spiritual, who worship God in spirit and truth, under the influence, and by the assistance of the Spirit of God, and with their whole hearts and spirits, and according to the truth of the Gospel; who keep the ordinances as they were delivered, without any human inventions, corruptions, and mixtures; who are sincere in their hearts, pure and sound in heart, simple, plain hearted, and single eyed; choose to be good, rather than seem to be so; whose desires after God, and divine things, and whose affections for them, are true and real, and proceed from the bottom of their hearts; and who have their conversation in the world by the grace of God, in simplicity and godly sincerity; and such the apostle wishes these saints to be, and adds, and without offence until the day of Christ; to God, as considered in the righteousness of Christ, in which they are perfectly without offence, and will always continue so; or in their walk and conversation before God, in which, though they may in many things offend, yet not be guilty of any notorious iniquity, and much less of living in it: and to themselves, to their own consciences, exercising a conscience void of offence towards God and men; acting according to that light they have received, and those principles they have embraced and professed; desiring to be kept from all evil, that it might not grieve and wound them; and doing nothing in things of an indifferent nature, with offence, or against the dictates of conscience, and to the violation of it: and also to others, to Jew or Gentile, to the world, or to the church of God, by avoiding every thing that is offensive to either; not good things, but evil ones, and those that are indifferent; that peace may be preserved, and their own good may not be evil spoken of; that the children of God may not be grieved, staggered, and stumbled, nor sinners hardened, or have any occasion to blaspheme. The phrase denotes an harmless life and conversation, and a continuance in it to the end, to the day of death, or coming of our Lord, which is to be loved, longed, wished, and looked for, and to be always had in view; and that to engage to a becoming life and conversation, with sincerity, and without offence, since in that day all hearts and actions will be exposed and laid open.”

“That ye may approve things that are excellent - Εις το δοκιμαζειν ὑμας τα διαφεροντα· To the end that ye may put to proof the things that differ, or the things that are in are more profitable. By the pure and abundant love which they received from God they would be able to try whatever differed from the teaching they had received, and from the experience they had in spiritual things. That ye may be sincere - Ἱνα ητε ειλικρινεις. The word ειλικρινεια, which we translate sincerity, is compounded of ειλη, the splendor of the sun, and κρινω, I judge; a thing which may be examined in the clearest and strongest light, without the possibility of detecting a single flaw or imperfection. "A metaphor," says Mr. Leigh, "taken from the usual practice of chapmen, in the view and choice of their wares, that bring them forth into the light and hold up the cloth against the sun, to see if they can espy any default in them. Pure as the sun." Be so purified and refined in your souls, by the indwelling Spirit, that even the light of God shining into your hearts, shall not be able to discover a fault that the love of God has not purged away. Our word sincerity is from the Latin sinceritas, which is compounded of sine, without, and cera, wax, and is a metaphor taken from clarified honey; for the mel sincerum, pure or clarified honey, is that which is sine cera, without wax, no part of the comb being left in it. Sincerity, taken in its full meaning, is a word of the most extensive import; and, when applied in reference to the state of the soul, is as strong as the word perfection itself. The soul that is sincere is the soul that is without sin. Without offense - Απροσκοποι· Neither offending God nor your neighbor; neither being stumbled yourselves, nor the cause of stumbling to others. Till the day of Christ - Till he comes to judge the world, or, till the day in which you are called into the eternal world. According to this prayer, a man, under the power and influence of the grace of God, may so love as never to offend his Maker, to the latest period of his life. Those who deny this, must believe that the Spirit of God either cannot or will not do it; or, that the blood of Christ cannot cleanse from all unrighteousness. And this would be not only antiscriptural, but also blasphemous.”

“Literally, "With a view to your proving (and so approving and embracing) the things that excel" (Rom 2:18); not merely things not bad, but the things best among those that are good; the things of more advanced excellence. Ask as to things, not merely, Is there no harm, but is there any good, and which is the best? sincere--from a Greek root. Examined in the sunlight and found pure. without offence--not stumbling; running the Christian race without falling through any stumbling-block, that is, temptation, in your way. till--rather, "unto," "against"; so that when the day of Christ comes, ye may be found pure and without offense.”
