Saint Ambrose of Milan

Bishop of Milan and one of the four great Latin Doctors, Ambrose was a Roman governor acclaimed bishop by the people before he had even been baptized. From Milan, then an imperial capital, he shaped Western worship — he is a father of Latin hymnody — instructed the newly baptized in works such as On the Mysteries, and did not shrink from rebuking emperors. Among those he baptized was Augustine, whom his preaching helped to convert.
