Saint Cyril of Alexandria
Cyril was patriarch of Alexandria and the Church’s foremost defender of the unity of Christ. When Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople, objected to calling Mary Theotokos — “God-bearer,” Mother of God — Cyril led the Council of Ephesus in 431 that condemned him and affirmed that the one born of Mary is truly God the Son made flesh. A formidable and sometimes ruthless churchman, whose Alexandria was torn by violence in these years, he was also a profound theologian whose Christology guided the councils that followed.
“O God, who didst make blessed Cyril, thy Confessor and Bishop, an invincible teacher of the divine motherhood of the most blessed Virgin Mary: grant, through his prayers, that we who believe her to be indeed the Mother of God, may find safety under her maternal protection.”
