Patristic Gregory of Nyssa
Bishop of Nyssa · Cappadocian Father
died c. 395
Gregory of Nyssa was the younger brother of Basil the Great and, with Basil and Gregory of Nazianzus, one of the three Cappadocian Fathers. A subtler and more speculative mind than his brother, he defended the Nicene faith at the First Council of Constantinople in 381 and wrote profound works of mystical theology — among them the Life of Moses and On the Making of Man — tracing the soul’s endless ascent toward a God who can never be exhausted.
