Hilary of Poitiers

Hilary was bishop of Poitiers and the first great Latin theologian of the Trinity — later ages called him “the Athanasius of the West.” Baptized as an adult, he was made bishop around 350 and soon clashed with the Arian emperor Constantius, who exiled him to Asia Minor. There, among the Greek-speaking churches, he deepened his learning and wrote his masterwork On the Trinity, bringing the full Nicene faith into the Latin tongue; he is also remembered as one of the first hymn-writers of the Western Church.
