Peter Chrysologus

Peter Chrysologus was bishop of Ravenna in the fifth century, when that city was an imperial capital. His surname — “Chrysologus,” the golden-worded — was given him for his preaching, making him the Western echo of the golden-mouthed Chrysostom of the East. Almost all that survives of his work is a collection of short, vivid sermons, which he deliberately kept brief so as not to weary his hearers; their clarity and warmth won him, centuries later, the title Doctor of the Church.
