A disciple of the Apostle John and bishop of Smyrna, Polycarp is one of the chief links between the apostolic age and the Church Fathers. Irenaeus, who heard him as a boy, remembered him recounting his conversations with those who had seen the Lord. He travelled to Rome to confer with Pope Anicetus over the date of Easter, and was burned at the stake about A.D. 155 — his martyrdom the earliest to survive in a detailed, first-hand account.
