Theophylact of Ohrid

Theophylact was the Byzantine archbishop of Ohrid, in the Bulgarian lands, and one of the most widely read biblical commentators of the Middle Ages. His commentaries on the Gospels and Epistles distilled the great Greek Fathers — above all John Chrysostom — into clear, continuous exposition, and they were prized in both East and West: Thomas Aquinas drew on them, and Erasmus praised them warmly. In the Orthodox Church they remain a standard guide to the New Testament to this day.
