Victorinus of Pettau

Victorinus was bishop of Poetovio (modern Ptuj, in Slovenia; “Pettau” is its German name) and the earliest Latin biblical commentator we know of. Though he wrote in Latin, he thought more readily in Greek, and his plain style drew a gentle criticism from Jerome — who nonetheless honoured him and later revised his greatest work, the Commentary on the Apocalypse, the oldest surviving Latin commentary on the Book of Revelation. He was martyred in the persecution of Diocletian, about the year 304.
