Huldrych Zwingli

Huldrych Zwingli led the Reformation in the Swiss city of Zurich, beginning about 1519 as he preached straight through the New Testament and called for a faith based on Scripture alone. Working closely with the city council, he stripped the churches of images, reformed the Mass, and reshaped Zurich’s worship and life. He broke with Martin Luther over the Lord’s Supper — Zwingli holding the bread and wine to be signs rather than the literal body and blood — and the two failed to agree at the Colloquy of Marburg in 1529. He was killed in 1531 at the battle of Kappel, serving as chaplain among his fellow citizens.
