But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience,11 Persecutions, afflictions: such as came upon me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra: what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord delivered me.12 And all that will live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution.13 But evil men and seducers shall grow worse and worse: erring, and driving into error.14 But continue thou in those things which thou hast learned, and which have been committed to thee: knowing of whom thou hast learned them;15 And because from thy infancy thou hast known the holy scriptures, which can instruct thee to salvation, by the faith which is in Christ Jesus.16 All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice,17 That the man of God may be perfect, furnished to every good work.
But since Enoch in the same Scripture has preached likewise concerning the Lord, nothing at all must be rejected by us which pertains to us; and we read that "every Scripture suitable for edification is divinely inspired. By the Jews it may now seem to have been rejected for that (very) reason, just like all the other (portions) nearly which tell of Christ.
Many are they that persecute me, and afflict me; but I have not declined from thy testimonies.160 The beginning of thy words is truth: all the judgments of thy justice are for ever.161 SIN. Princes have persecuted me without cause: and my heart hath been in awe of thy words.165 Much peace have they that love thy law, and to them there is no stumbling block.166 I looked to thy salvation, O Lord: and I loved thy commandments.168 I have kept thy commandments and thy testimonies: because all my ways are in thy sight.
Frequent prayer also commends us to God. For if the prophet says, "Seven times a day have I praised you," though he was busy with the affairs of a kingdom, what ought we to do, who read, "Watch and pray that you enter not into temptation"? Certainly our customary prayers ought to be said with giving of thanks, when we rise from sleep, when we go forth, when we prepare to receive food, after receiving it and at the hour of incense, when at last we are going to rest.
And Jesus answering, said, teaching in the temple: How do the scribes say, that Christ is the son of David?36 For David himself saith by the Holy Ghost: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy footstool.37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord, and whence is he then his son? And a great multitude heard him gladly.
(ubi sup.) But the putting own of His enemies by the Father, does not shew the weakness of the Son, but the unity of nature, by which One works in the Other; for the Son also subjects the Father’s enemies, because He glorifies His Father upon earth.
(ubi sup.) The question of Jesus is useful for us even now against the Jews; for they, acknowledging that Christ is to come, assert that He is a mere man, a holy Person descended from David. Let us then ask them, as our Lord has taught us, if He be a mere man, and only the son of David, how David in the Holy Spirit calls Him Lord. They are not however reproved for calling Him David’s son, but for not believing Him to be the Son of God. It goes on, And the common people heard him gladly.
