And there was a day when Eliseus passed by Sunam: now there was a great woman there, who detained him to eat bread; and as he passed often that way, he turned into her house to eat bread.9 And she said to her husband: I perceive that this is a holy man of God, who often passeth by us.10 Let us therefore make him a little chamber, and put a little bed in it for him, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick, that when he cometh to us, he may abide there.11 Now there was a certain day when he came and turned in to the chamber, and rested there.14 And he said: What will she then that I do for her? And Giezi said: Do not ask, for she hath no son, and her husband is old.15 Then he bid him call her: And when she was called, and stood before the door.16 He said to her: At this time, and this same hour, if life accompany, thou shalt have a son in thy womb. But she answered: Do not, I beseech thee, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie to thy handmaid.
There [lived] a prominent woman. [I.e.,] an important [woman]. And I saw in Pirkei of Rabbi Eliezer, that she was the sister of Avishag the Shunamis.
Thereafter, whenever he passed through. In that city, he would stop at her house to eat a meal.
He would go. [יור is] the present tense, [i.e.,] he would go there.
You have busied yourself with us. On our account.
With all this attention. To put your heart into this task, as in, “and shudders [=וחרד] concerning My word,” [i.e.,] is diligent concerning the task that it be accomplished, and puts his heart into it.
What can be done for you? What do you need that we do for you, for you busied yourself on our account.
“In the midst of my people.” Among my relatives, [i.e.,] no one harms me. I have no need for the king or for the general of the army.
“At this season [next year] when the time comes to give birth.” Just as you are alive and well today, so will you be alive at this season [next year] at this time and embracing a son.
“Do not my master.” Do not say, “embracing a son.” Why do I need to embrace him if I will end up burying him? This is what she said to him when he died, “Did I not say, ‘Do not mislead me’?”
Do not deceive. Do not show me something that will fail. You have power to beg mercy, so that a son will be given to me. But I beg you, do not give me [any child], rather a child who will live.
Do not deceive. Like “whose waters will not fail.”
The mercies of the Lord I will sing for ever. I will shew forth thy truth with my mouth to generation and generation.3 For thou hast said: Mercy shall be built up for ever in the heavens: thy truth shall be prepared in them.16 Blessed is the people that knoweth jubilation. They shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance:17 And in thy name they shall rejoice all the day, and in thy justice they shall be exalted.18 For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy good pleasure shall our horn be exalted.19 For our protection is of the Lord, and of our king the holy one of Israel.
Know you not that all we, who are baptized in Christ Jesus, are baptized in his death?4 For we are buried together with him by baptism into death; that as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life.8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall live also together with Christ:9 Knowing that Christ rising again from the dead, dieth now no more, death shall no more have dominion over him.10 For in that he died to sin, he died once; but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God:11 So do you also reckon, that you are dead to sin, but alive unto God, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Mindful of him, do ye by all means know that Jesus the Lord was truly born of Mary, being made of a woman; and was as truly crucified. For, says he, "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of the Lord Jesus." And He really suffered, and died, and rose again. For says [Paul], "If Christ should become passible, and should be the first to rise again from the dead." And again, "In that He died, He died unto sin once: but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God." Otherwise, what advantage would there be in [becoming subject to] bonds, if Christ has not died? what advantage in patience? what advantage in [enduring] stripes? And why such facts as the following: Peter was crucified; Paul and James were slain with the sword; John was banished to Patmos; Stephen was stoned to death by the Jews who killed the Lord? But, [in truth, ] none of these sufferings were in vain; for the Lord was really crucified by the ungodly.
He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me.†38 And he that taketh not up his cross, and followeth me, is not worthy of me.39 He that findeth his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for me, shall find it.†40 He that receiveth you, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive the reward of a prophet: and he that receiveth a just man in the name of a just man, shall receive the reward of a just man.42 And whosoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.
Or; They that are Christ’s have crucified the body with its vices and lusts. (Gal. 5:24.) And he is unworthy of Christ who does not take up His cross, in which we suffer with Him, die with Him, are buried and rise again with Him, and follow his Lord, purposing to live in newness of spirit in this sacrament of the faith.
These words shew that He has a Mediator’s office, and since He came from God, when He is received by us, through Him God is transfused into us; and by this disposition of grace to have received the Apostles is no other than to have received God; for Christ dwells in them, and God in Christ.
Or; Seeing beforehand that there would be many who would only glory in the name of Apostleship, but in their whole life and walk would be unworthy of it, He does not therefore deprive of its reward that service which might be rendered to them in belief of their religious life. For though they were the very least, that is, the greatest of sinners, yet even small offices of mercy shewn them, such as are denoted by the cup of cold water, should not be shewn in vain. For the honour is not done to a man that is a sinner, but to his title of disciple.
