But he giveth greater grace. The Spirit of grace does not make men envy; nay rather he gives grace, that is, gratuitous gifts, greater than are the riches of the world. Wherefore, that is, that we may know, he gives, and to whom he does not give, the Scripture says: He resisteth the proud, but to the humble he giveth grace, etc. God punishes all the wicked, but he is said specially to resist the proud, because they are stricken with the greater punishment who neglect to be made subject to God by repenting. But to the humble he giveth grace, who in the wounds of their own vices submit themselves to the hands of the true physician.
