Rashi, on Lam 2:13

Rashi · 1040–1105
Lam 2:13 · Douay-Rheims
“Mem. To what shall I compare thee? or to what shall I liken thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? to what shall I equal thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Sion? for great as the sea is thy destruction: who shall heal thee?”
On this verse:
“What shall I testify for you? What shall I compare to you to say to you, “Why do you wonder about your destruction? Didn’t that also happen to such and such a nation, just like you?” What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you When trouble befalls a person, [others] say to him, “This also happened to so-and-so.” These are consolations for him.”

Hebrew and Aramaic words are the commentator’s citations of the sacred text; the English translation that follows each is the translator’s.
